This morning someone asked about all the dash lights I could illuminate on my car without it being broken and instead of hunting for that post, I will post it here
Ignore the "check engine" light since I didn't actually start it. Also, I guess the seatbelt illumination isn't exactly fair either, but whateves.
From left to right
ABS - turns off ABS when you lock the center diff cause it assumes your headed off road
Center diff lock
Check engine
Seatbelt
High beams
Brake (handbrake)
Front diff lock
Rear Diff lock

'95 Cruiser?

97, but yes, FZJ80

What does P mean? I've never seen one of these before...
![]() 02/04/2015 at 15:33 |

its in "P" because there is no light for "D"

I see your oil level sensor is still working...mine however...

I really want to test this out on mine, but it'll be at the garage until tomorrow. They pretty much all come on for a second after you start the car, but that'd be cheating.
I doubt I'll be able to get anywhere near yours, or pretty much anyone else who responded to the post, though. Base-model '90s French superminis don't have much in the way of extra stuff for lights to tell you about.

Dang! Off by two years... Love the FZJ80s. I think I'll get one soon and restore it up.

No hazards/turn signals? I suppose they'd just lead to the most frustrating shutter lag vs. flashy time game ever.

P is for "puto"

for 255k miles, this one is pretty well restored. minimal rust, rebuilt topend, rebuilt axles with new gears and seals, new bearings, etc. should be good to go for a while.

yup, thats the exact reason.

Wow, 225k miles? That's the kind of vehicle I'm looking for although they hold their value like you wouldn't believe.

sorry, no 255k miles. and oh, I believe how well they hold their value, I had to pay nearly 6 large to get one with the lockers at 220k

I thought one of the rules was the engine had to be running.

only the check engine light would change. I didn't feel like firing it up

My bad, I misread that. Hahaha $6,000 isn't that bad when you've put on 30k with more to go!

fun fact, that's also what it looks like when your alternator starts going out except they flash intermittently.

what, all the lights? good to know!
![]() 02/04/2015 at 17:37 |

yeah all the idiot lights flash on and off - it will go on like this for quite a while before the brushes finally give out. Recent experience -

damn brushes....how hard was the job?
![]() 02/04/2015 at 17:48 |
|
Not very hard, I replaced the belts while I was at it. Doable in a Saturday. Hardest part is getting the alternator off and on the engine. You have to remove the battery tray and even then its really tight. My ratchet head wrenches saved me a lot of time and busted knuckles. New brushes were only $25 at the dealership.

cheaper than the "courtesy light switch" or the Toyota key blanks I will be ordering.

Is there no light at all, or is it just burned out like my mom's '96 Camry was?
![]() 02/04/2015 at 18:05 |
|
burned out, common mid 90's Toyota issue. No I'm not tearing the dash apart to change one light thank you very much.

both my rear door courtesy light switches are out too. Although the courtesy lights put out so little power I don't care. Need to do a led up-grade.

the trouble is that with the security system, the doors lock after a set interval if you don't open the door....if the car doesn't think the door is open...it locks them again. my wife and I have both locked the keys in the car this way.

huh mine doesn't lock the doors, but the alarm arms itself (which is terribly annoying) after a few minutes if all the doors are closed. I think I'm going to focus on getting the windows to work in the cold first then tackle the lights. BTW I ordered the Marks adapter this week. Operation engine swap will commence in May.
